Supplies for Your January '25 Bullet Journal Setup

January bullet journal supplies

Getting started with your January bullet journal setup doesn’t require an arsenal of supplies—just a few essentials and a little creativity. Here’s a list of the tools and materials I used to bring my pages to life this month:

1. Bullet Journal

I use a blank dot-grid journal, which provides the perfect balance of structure and flexibility for designing spreads. Dot-grid pages are ideal for creating layouts, sketching, and keeping everything neat and tidy. I use an older version of this Leuchtturm 1917 bullet journal.

2. Magazine Clippings & Collage Materials

For a wintery, January-inspired theme, I curated magazine clippings with cozy and seasonal imagery. Look for colors, patterns, or photos that evoke the mood you want for the month. If you don’t have magazines handy, consider printing images from Pinterest or using scrapbook paper.

3. Washi Tape

Washi tape is a versatile and decorative tool to frame your pages, add pops of color, or secure collage elements like “peekaboo windows” for hidden journaling spaces. This month, I opted for muted, wintry tones and metallic accents.

4. Pens & Markers

I always keep a selection of fine-tip pens, metallic markers, and colored pencils on hand. For January, I leaned into cool blues, silvers, and golds to create a frosty, winter-inspired vibe.

5. Stickers

Stickers are a quick way to add visual interest without extra effort. For January, I chose stickers with celestial motifs, winter themes, and uplifting quotes to tie my pages together. The Happy Planner makes my favorite sticker packs!

6. Glue Stick & Scissors

Essential for securing magazine clippings or other collage elements to your pages. A ruler is also handy if you want to ensure clean edges or straight lines in your layouts.

7. Printer (Optional)

If you like to add personal photos or custom graphics, a small photo printer like this Canon Ivy Mini Printer can be a great investment. I use it to print my “photo of the month” for my intro spread.

With these simple tools, you can create a journal setup that feels polished, personal, and inspiring for the new year. Don’t feel the need to buy anything fancy—your creativity is the most important tool!

Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix and match supplies you already have. The beauty of bullet journaling is how customizable it is to your style and preferences!

January '25 Cover: Setting the Tone for the Month

January 2025 bullet journal cover featuring a cozy room

Your bullet journal cover sets the tone for the month and offers a creative opportunity to reflect your goals, mood, and intentions. For January, I wanted a spread that feels cozy yet inspiring, balancing the quiet of winter with the promise of a fresh start.

Here’s how I set my January bullet journal cover page and how you can create something similar:

  1. Choose a Central Image: I started with a stunning magazine clipping of a serene winter scene that evokes calm and reflection—perfect for kicking off the year. Look for an image that resonates with your January vibe, whether it’s snowy landscapes, warm knits, or a bold celestial theme.
  2. Add Washi Tape for Framing: To tie the layout together, I used a darker washi tape with a constellation pattern to frame the page. Washi tape is great for covering uneven edges or adding subtle pops of texture.
  3. Hand-Lettering the Month: I chose a constellation-inspired style for my “January” title, combining metallic pens and simple, clean lettering. This added a touch of sparkle and elegance to the page while complementing the winter theme.
  4. Finish with Stickers or Quotes: To complete the look, I added a quote sticker that inspires optimism for the year ahead: “This will be an amazing year.” Choose a quote that aligns with your personal goals or simply makes you smile when you open your journal.

Make It Your Own

Here are a few ideas to help you customize your January cover:

  • Seasonal Imagery: Incorporate photos or clippings that reflect your local winter scene or personal style—snowy landscapes, cozy interiors, or even abstract art.
  • Color Palette: Experiment with colors that speak to your vision for January. Blues, silvers, and whites evoke calm, while warm tones like golds and browns add coziness.
  • Quotes & Affirmations: Hand-letter or include a printed quote that aligns with your goals, intentions, or focus for the year ahead.
  • Textures: Try layering washi tape, scrapbook paper, or fabric scraps for added depth and interest.

A January cover is more than just a pretty page—it’s a visual declaration of how you want to step into the new year. Whether you keep it simple or go all out with details, make it a page that sparks joy and motivates you every time you open your journal.

Intro Spread: Intentions and Bucket List

January 2025 monthly bullet journal spread with space for intentions

The intro spread in my January bullet journal setup is where my monthly vision starts to take shape. I designed this page to capture my intentions for the month, create a seasonal bucket list, and include space for reflection and inspiration. This layout is not only functional but also sets the tone for a mindful and intentional start to the year.

Setting up your own bullet journal intro page

1. Bucket List: Capturing Experiences

The bucket list section is a fun and flexible way to plan small, seasonal joys. For January, I kept the list simple and focused on meaningful experiences that align with winter and new beginnings. Examples include:

  • Take a quiet winter walk.
  • Host a cozy game night.
  • Try a new healthy recipe.
  • Organize a small corner of my home.

Think of your bucket list as a guide to enjoying the month—not a to-do list that adds stress.

2. Placeholder for a Monthly Photo

One of my favorite elements of the intro spread is the photo placeholder. This space is reserved for a picture that encapsulates the spirit of January, such as a snowy landscape, a cozy moment, or a small accomplishment. I use my HP Sprocket to print photos and add them later, but you could also tape in a Polaroid, a clipping, or even draw something meaningful.

3. Intentions: Focus for the Month

Setting monthly intentions helps keep me grounded. For January, my focus is on creating space—physically, mentally, and spiritually—for the year ahead. I leave room on the page to jot down goals, guiding themes, or affirmations, such as:

  • “Ease into the year with grace.”
  • “Be open to new opportunities.”

4. Space for Quotes or Media

The bottom of the bullet journal page setup is reserved for inspiration—whether it’s a motivational quote, a Bible verse, or a list of books, movies, or songs I’m enjoying. For January, I chose a simple quote to reinforce my intention: “The magic of new beginnings is in the air.”

Make It Your Own

Here’s how you can adapt this page setup for your bullet journal:

  • Bucket List Ideas: Tailor your list to your goals and interests. Think about seasonal activities, self-care rituals, or creative projects.
  • Custom Photo Space: If photos aren’t your style, use this space for a small sketch, a decorative sticker, or a list of memories.
  • Intentions Section: Write down your word of the month, guiding themes, or affirmations. Make it personal and motivational.
  • Quotes & Media: Include things that inspire you—whether it’s a favorite lyric, a podcast recommendation, or a mantra for the month.

The intro spread is a versatile space to set the stage for January. Whether you want to plan activities, track goals, or simply reflect on what matters most, this page is a creative canvas for starting the year with purpose.

Monthly Calendar: Staying Organized with Style

January 2025 bullet journal monthly calendar spread

The monthly calendar is the backbone of my bullet journal setup. For January, I kept the design simple and functional, while adding small, thoughtful details to make it visually inspiring. A well-designed calendar not only keeps you organized but also sets the tone for the month ahead.

Things to consider while doing the setup for your January bullet journal calendar page:

1. Clean and Functional Layout

The calendar layout spans two pages, with each day of the month given its own square. This format allows plenty of space to jot down appointments, birthdays, deadlines, and events. For January, I added subtle gold accents to the gridlines and date headers for a touch of elegance.

2. Seasonal Collage Accents

To tie the calendar to the month’s theme, I incorporated magazine clippings with wintry tones of blue, white, and silver. These small touches bring warmth and personality to the page without overwhelming the calendar’s functionality.

3. Highlighting Key Dates

I always like to mark important dates ahead of time. For January, this includes my wedding anniversary, a few work deadlines, and family gatherings. I used metallic markers and small stickers to make these stand out while maintaining a cohesive design.

4. Flexible Space for Notes and Goals

At the bottom of the calendar, I added a small section for monthly goals and notes. This is where I jot down reminders, to-dos, or even a motivational quote to keep me focused throughout the month.

Make It Your Own

Here are some ideas for creating a monthly calendar setup that works for you:

  • Customize Your Format: Whether you prefer a vertical or horizontal layout, find a format that suits your planning style. Use larger boxes if you have a busy schedule or smaller ones if your focus is more minimalist.
  • Add Seasonal Flair: Incorporate stickers, washi tape, or clippings that evoke the mood of the month. A winter palette with icy blues and whites can feel calming and reflective for January.
  • Highlight Key Dates: Use markers or small icons to draw attention to birthdays, appointments, or other important events.
  • Leave Space for Notes: Reserve a small area for reminders, monthly goals, or even a quick reflection on how the month is shaping up.

The monthly calendar is one of the most versatile and functional pages in your journal. It’s the perfect blend of organization and creativity, helping you stay on top of your schedule while enjoying a beautifully crafted spread.

Weekly Spreads: Flexible and Fun Layouts

a bullet journal spread featuring square for each day of the week

Weekly spreads are where the magic happens in my January bullet journal setup. These pages are my go-to for capturing daily to-dos, reflections, and moments of creativity. I’ve set up a layout that is both functional and visually appealing, giving me the flexibility to adapt as I go.

Favorite ideas for setting up weekly bullet journal spreads

1. Daily Squares for Organization

Each weekly spread includes a square for every day of the week, providing ample space to plan, reflect, or simply jot down notes. I love how this format keeps everything structured while allowing for creative freedom within each square.

2. Peekaboo Windows for Hidden Journaling

A standout feature in my weekly spreads is the use of “peekaboo windows.” These are small magazine clippings or washi-taped accents that lift to reveal extra writing space underneath. They’re perfect for capturing private thoughts, quick reflections, or hidden bursts of creativity without cluttering the page.

3. Coordinated Color Palette and Stickers

To maintain a cohesive aesthetic, I used a palette of cool winter tones—blues, golds, and silvers—paired with metallic markers and seasonal stickers. Each week has its own unique flair while still feeling connected to the month’s overall theme.

4. Functional Yet Adaptable Design

What I love most about this layout is how it evolves with my needs. One day, a square might hold a to-do list; another day, it becomes a mini diary entry or gratitude log. This flexibility is key to making the weekly spreads work for me, no matter how my schedule changes.

Make It Your Own

Here are a few ways to setup a weekly bullet journal spread that suits your unique style and needs:

  • Experiment with Layouts: Try grids, horizontal rows, or vertical columns to see what format works best for your planning style.
  • Add Hidden Details: Incorporate peekaboo windows with magazine clippings, stickers, or even fold-out flaps for extra journaling space.
  • Theme Each Week: Use different colors, stickers, or accents to give each week a distinct look while tying them all back to your monthly theme.
  • Combine Functions: Use your weekly spreads as a hybrid planner, scrapbook, or diary. Add to-do lists, daily highlights, or even quick sketches to reflect your day.
  • Plan Ahead, But Leave Room: Pre-fill your weekly spreads with the basics, but leave enough blank space to adapt as the week unfolds.

Weekly spreads are where structure meets creativity, offering a space to stay organized while expressing yourself. With the right balance of function and flair, your weekly pages can become a true reflection of your life and goals.

Feature Spread: January Goals and Intentions

bullet journal spread featuring January 2025 goals and habit trackers

The feature spread for January is where I set the tone for the month by focusing on my goals and intentions. This spread is the heart of my bullet journal for January, combining creativity and functionality to inspire me throughout the month.

1. The Layout: Structure Meets Flexibility

For this January bullet journal setup, I’ve designed my goals spread using a mix of boxes, peekaboo windows, and open space for notes. The layout is flexible, with distinct areas for tracking goals, noting intentions, and recording progress as the month unfolds. I love how this setup keeps me organized while also allowing room for reflection and adaptation.

2. Setting Goals with Purpose

This month’s overarching theme is “creating space”—both literally and metaphorically. Each goal connects to this idea, encouraging me to focus on what truly matters and let go of what doesn’t.

Key goals include:

  • Cultivating Silence: Setting aside daily time for quiet reflection without screens or distractions.
  • Prayer and Connection: Using my journal to write out prayers and remain intentional in relationships.
  • Attentiveness and Expectation: Staying present to new opportunities and fostering a hopeful mindset.

3. Visual and Interactive Elements

I’ve added magazine clippings, metallic markers, and washi tape to enhance the spread visually. The peekaboo windows create hidden spaces for more private notes or reflections. These interactive elements make the page more engaging and encourage me to revisit it often.

4. Habit Trackers for Accountability

To stay on track, I’ve included two habit trackers:

  • Daily Quiet Time: Marking each day I spend in silence or reflection.
  • Prayer Practice: A simple tracker to encourage consistency in prayer and connection.

5. A Space for Flexibility

I’ve also left room in this spread for unexpected insights or goals that arise as the month progresses. This ensures my journal remains a living document that evolves with me.

Make It Your Own

Here are a few ideas to help you setup a bullet journal feature spread that resonates with your January goals:

  • Start with a Theme: Choose a guiding word or phrase for the month to center your intentions.
  • Use Visual Cues: Incorporate magazine clippings, stickers, or drawings that reflect your theme and inspire you.
  • Add Trackers: Include simple habit or goal trackers to stay accountable.
  • Leave Room to Grow: Keep space for new ideas or reflections that arise as the month unfolds.
  • Focus on What Matters: Let your goals align with your values and priorities for the season.

A thoughtfully designed feature spread can serve as a personal roadmap for the month, helping you stay focused, inspired, and aligned with your intentions. As January unfolds, this space will become a valuable tool for tracking progress and celebrating wins, big or small.

Adapting this Bullet Journal Setup for Your Life

Your January bullet journal setup should be a reflection of your life, priorities, and preferences. While my January setup works for me, you can easily adapt these ideas to fit your unique goals and needs. Here are some suggestions to make the setup your own:

1. Simplify Where Needed

Not a fan of detailed artwork or elaborate layouts? No problem! Use a minimalistic approach with simple hand-drawn boxes or typed printouts for your spreads. The key is functionality—keep it practical and easy to maintain.

2. Personalize Your Themes

My January theme centers on “creating space,” but your theme might be completely different. Here are some alternative ideas:

  • Fresh Starts: Focus on new beginnings with themes like growth, renewal, or opportunity.
  • Wellness Reset: Prioritize health and self-care with spreads for exercise, meal planning, or mindfulness.
  • Winter Wonderland: Embrace the season with cozy layouts, snowflakes, and wintery imagery.

3. Adjust for Your Lifestyle

Think about how you plan to use your journal:

  • Busy Schedules: Opt for smaller, quicker layouts like a simple weekly task list or calendar.
  • Creative Outlets: Use this space to experiment with art, lettering, or creative trackers.
  • Goal-Oriented Layouts: If you’re a planner at heart, add extra goal-setting or project-tracking pages.

4. Try Alternative Feature Spreads

If goal-setting isn’t your focus this month, replace the feature spread with something that resonates more:

  • A gratitude log to record daily joys.
  • A vision board for the year ahead.
  • A reflection space to jot down lessons learned from the previous year.

5. Use the Supplies You Have

While I enjoy working with magazine clippings and metallic markers, don’t feel pressured to gather the same materials. Pens, colored pencils, and washi tape can go a long way, or even a simple black pen and paper for a minimalist look.
